Jonny Mnemonic

Jonny Mnemonic

This week I chose to read another short story, the author this time, William Gibson.  The story from what I can figure out takes place on an alternate earth or maybe a future earth where people change themselves. In other word they enhanced themselves artificially. Our main character Jonny ha what I assume some sort of chip in his head, that save important files or memories. He also charges his clients to store the data, this way no government or hacker can try and get the files. But something went wrong and a client never paid them. Jonny goes in disguised to try and collect his fees, when his client tells him he did business with some wrong people. The wrong people being the, Yazuka.

The Yazuka in this reality has absorbed all of the others gangs from around the world and has become a soft of monopoly in this type of business.  From what I read there is only one reality that takes place throughout the short story. Unlike the movie Paprika, by Satoshi Kon, where the story spans multiple realities, surprising the audience each time. One takes place in the real world and the other take place in the dream world, which has many different realities spanning across the world. The character paprika is an avatar for Dr. Atsuko Chiba, who is trying to keep the device called the DC mini out of the wrong hands. If not it could destroy people’s minds. Paprika is a movie where the multiple realities really makes the audience on constant alert, due to the fact we don’t always know whose dream we are in or if we are in a dream at all. Now that I have watched it more than once I started to finally figure out which reality we are in and that takes the story to a whole new level.
