Japanese Horror

A Wild Sheep Chase

In most horror stories I have read or have seen they always have a clear depiction of the good and evil. With this novel I had a hard time finding out who is the “evil” force and who is the “good” force. In this novel I discovered that it’s not black and white, its more of a grey area in terms of evil and good. The author doesn’t give anyone a name, only nicknames. Such as The Rat, The sheep Man, and . In the book, the protagonist goal is to find a sheep that the businessman gave him a picture of. He drops everything, his business, his girlfriend eventually, and his home. It isn’t until the end of the book do you realized what the “Evil” is, Ambition.

Compared to the western themes of horror in, especially gothic themes. This book has none. It doesn’t have the dark scary castle, spider webs, and the monster or paranormal antagonist. It’s a horror that is about the real things in life that can ruin your and other people lives. The sheep represents ambition. The character the of the Rat life everything behind to find his “sheep” and lost everything in the process and eventually his life at the end. Same with the sheep man and the main character realizes that he also has lost everything, but for him it’s not too late to find it again.  Its was defiantly the most interesting horror story that I have read. It took a lot of time to figure out what the actually plot was and the evil in the end. It is defiantly a book I recommend to read twice, just due to the fact that the second read through, the reader can truly see who are the antagonists.
